3000 personas probarán una posible vacuna contra el virus del Sida
Cerca de 3.000 sudafricanos van a participar en una investigación para poner a prueba una posible vacuna contra el virus del sida, en un proceso que durará cuatro años. La vacuna lleva el nombre de MRKAd5 HIV-1 y ha sido desarrollada por la multinacional Merck.
Las primeras dosis ya han sido aplicadas hace dos semanas en Soweto y que ésta será la prueba de una vacuna más extensa que se realiza en todo el continente. Sudáfrica, además de ser el país del continente donde más gente será sometida a la prueba, es, después de la India, la segunda nación con el mayor número de enfermos con el virus del sida, según los últimos datos del Programa de la ONU para el VIH/Sida (ONUSIDA).
Los voluntarios que participen en la prueba tendrán entre 18 y 35 años, ninguno de ellos ha de estar infectados con el virus del sida y tiene que ser activo sexualmente. Las mujeres no pueden estar embarazadas.
Todos ellos recibirán información sobre las características de la prueba y también podrán acceder a tratamiento para evitar infecciones sexuales durante el estudio, incluida la circuncisión, que se ha demostrado puede reducir los riesgos de contagio.
La vacuna está elaborada con adenovirus, un virus que causa enfermedades respiratorias y que
ha sido modificado para que no puedan generar esos males.
